WINKLEIGH is an ancient village on a lofty hill. It was one of the nucleated villages founded in the early days of the Saxon occupation of Devon and had the only park recorded in the Devon Domesday. It had a 500-acre wood of which the present Winkleigh Wood is a remnant. (for a short history of the village click on the upper-left website logo of this page).

Its many old thatched houses give it a typical Devon character and the village has a strong community spirit with fayres and other events organised predominantly throughout the summer but also there is an excellent bonfire held each year at the cider press and christmas lighting party in the central square.

The thatched Kings Arms in the central square is very popular with visitors coming from far and wide for its old world atmosphere and excellent menu. Doyles is a world class private dining restaraunt (bookings required) and is off the square. The village store is well stocked (open daily from 8:30am to 6:30pm) and there is also a butchers, post office, vet and just outside the village a farm shop. (for a list of other good pubs please click on the bottom right image of the Kings Arms )

The village is half way between the Dartmoor town of Okehampton and North Devon's Great Torrington ('the Cavalier town'). Both these places are well worth a visit. In the summer Torrington is famous for its Civil war re-enactments and has a year round pannier market. Okehampton provides easy access to walking on Dartmoor and has many shops including two supermarkets (Somerfield and Waitrose).
